| Kursens syfte | This course aims to give the students who work mainly in wet lab, an opportunity to obtain a foundation in the principles of bioinformatics, so they can start to develop skills in bioinformatics. This is done by equipping and familiarizing the students with several bioinformatic tools commonly used in molecular biology. |
| Kursens lärandemål | By the end of the course the participants should be able to:
- use the command line interface (a text-based means of interacting with a computer), - know principles of python (a programming language) and be able to manage data sets and create graphs, - know the basic principles for analyzing high-throughput sequencing data, - have the foundations to critically assess the main steps of the taught data analysis techniques. |
| Kursens innehåll | Bash command line interface, genome browsers, python including plotting, high-throughput sequencing in the form of RNA-seq. |
| Arbetsformer | Each session of the course starts with an introductory interactive lecture, followed by hands-on computer exercises. Most of the course consists of hands-on exercises where the students can work in small groups (2 to 3) and interact with the teachers and moderators. An online session of introductory exercises will be included in the course before the face to face sessions start. |
| Obligatoriska moment | Both the introductory lectures and the practical sessions are compulsory, unless stated they are not. This is because the course is designed to gradually increase in complexity. Absence has to be compensated for in agreement with the course organizers. The examination is compulsory. |
| Examination | The examination is in line with the intended learning outcomes and involves practical exercises of each of the sessions taught. The exercises are solved during the last day of the course. The process and solutions of the examination can be discussed in small groups (2 to 3) and with the teachers. The answers of the exam should be handed in to the teachers individually. |
| Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel | Students should bring their own computer and be prepared to install the software required for the course. The admitted students will be contacted in advance by the course organizers with instructions for the installation process. Specific literature for each of the topics will be distributed during the course. |

| Urval av studenter | Selection will be based on 1)students who do not have prior knowledge in bioinformatics, 2) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant’s doctoral project (according to written motivation), 3) start date of doctoral studies (priority given to earlier start date) |
| Övrig information | The course is held from 9:00 to 16:30 in a presidential format and is usually in the classrooms of the Widerströmska Huset (Tomtebodavägen 18) at Karolinska Institutet Solna Campus. The students will be info in good time of the exact location in advance. Depending on the students' needs we can arrange a hybrid course. |
