Kursens syfte The aim of the course is to acquire basic knowledge of pulmonary inflammation from a clinical perspective through to detailed disease mechanisms. The course will cover current research related to important pulmonary diseases and to develop this knowledge, the student should be able to formulate relevant questions to improve their understanding of a specific disease as well as questions that should be answered by future research.
Kursens lärandemål For each of the four disease areas, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung diseases (ILD + sarcoidosis) and pulmonary infections (with COVID and TBC), the ILOs are to review principles of lung pathophysiology, clinical and diagnostic, to evaluate inflammatory and immunological mechanisms, to reflect upon current research topics, and to summarize different in vivo models for experimental lung diseases.
Kursens innehåll This course will address the principles and challenges of important inflammatory lung diseases from a translational perspective, that is from clinical practice to experimental research. The course will be interactive between the participants and the lecturers and will focus on the following topics: asthma, COPD, ILD, lung infections and animal models used in respiratory research. Lectures will cover epidemiology, symptoms and differential diagnosis, diagnostic methods, pathogenic mechanisms, treatments (existing and future). Demonstrations will cover methods that are used for diagnostic and/or research purposes: spirometry, lung imaging and animal experiments. For all diseases, specific lectures will explain how research in each field has evolved and where the front-line is today.
Arbetsformer The course, given for two weeks, comprises 10 days of scheduled studies that include literature studies, lectures, demonstrations, group discussions and preparation for an oral group presentation.
Obligatoriska moment Lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, passing the individual examination and active participation in presentation is compulsory. Certain absence from lectures and demonstrations can be compensated for after individual discussion with the course organizers.
Examination Individual written examination, group discussions and presentation.
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel Relevant journal articles will be chosen based on the newest breakthroughs within the field and will be distributed in good time before the course starts.
Antal studenter 10 - 30
Urval av studenter Selection will be based on 1) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant's doctoral project (according to written motivation), 2) start date of doctoral studies (priority given to earlier start date)
Övrig information The course will be for ten days. Half of the time will be lectures, case discussions, demonstrations, examinations and presentations, and the other part will be self-studies.
