Kursens syfte | This course should provide a general understanding of how molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms underlie the neurobiological function of the somatosensory (proprioception, pain, touch), auditory, vestibular and visual systems and of how these sensations are processed and integrated centrally. The course should widen the knowledge of the students within the neuroscience community. |
Kursens lärandemål | Upon completion of the course, the doctoral students will be able
1. to show an understanding of the main steps of the development and maturation of each sensory system. 2. to describe the overall organization and function of the different sensory systems. 3. to show an understanding of how information from different sensory modalities are centrally integrated. 4. to reflect on and conceptually apply knew knowledge to their specific research project. |
Kursens innehåll | The course will cover the development of sensory systems (similarity and uniqueness); from their origin, main steps of development, their central innervation and process of multisensory integration. The course will go through cutting-edge technologies used in up to date experimental investigation of cellular type/function and connectivity. |
Arbetsformer | Lectures by invited international experts, group work and seminar presentations and a conference (free of charges for the course participants). |
Obligatoriska moment | All elements, conference, lectures and the seminar presentation (examination) are compulsory. |
Examination | The student knowledge will be evaluated in team discussions and seminar presentations. All intended learning outcomes will be examined and need to be passed in order to receive a pass grade. |
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel | Recommended literature will be provided by the course organizers on the first day of the course. It will consist of a selected list of review and research articles covering the course content. |
Antal studenter | 20 - 25 |
Urval av studenter | Selection will be based on 1) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant's doctoral project (according to written motivation), 2) start date of doctoral studies (priority given to earlier start date) |
Övrig information | The course will be held the whole week from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 17:00. The course contains one day of conference with invited speakers for each topics. The course will take place in Biomedicum. |
