Kursens lärandemål After the course: 1. Students will be able to distinguish between the terms sex and gender. 2. Students will be able to evaluate the suitability of the design and analysis of preclinical and clinical research studies (e.g. their PhD project) to identify and quantify potential of sex and gender differences. 3. Students will be able to illustrate the scientific basis of known sex and gender differences. 4. Students will be able to identify known sex and gender differences with regard to diseases, and differences in response to or effects of drugs and other medical interventions in the treatment and management of these conditions.
Kursens innehåll The course is for both preclinical and doctoral students embarking upon the doctoral education in medical science, and those who wish to ""catch up"" on recent knowledge gains about the difference between men and women in both health and disease. We shall discuss some basic methodologies, theories and cellular biology, which will be considered in the relation to clinically relevant topics important for gender medicine. Several diseases of public health concern have already been identified. Those include cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, neuropsychiatric disorders, steroid metabolism disorders as well as inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Moreover pharmacological aspects as well as health economical issues will be considered in each of those conditions. Finally, further exploration of experimental models that could help to broaden our understanding of the disease process pertinent to the defined sex will be discussed.
Arbetsformer The course includes comprehensive lectures that describe most important topics relevant for the course. Each lecturer will be asked to provide 3 questions that should be strictly referred to the subject treated during the presentation in order to demonstrate the level of students comprehension in the examination. These questions will be used during final examination. Moreover, at the end of each the lecturer, the course organizer together with lecture will initiate the whole group discussion on the key message of the topic to enhance the learning process and for critical assessment of acquired knowledge and attitudes. Based on the student¿s background and scientific interest, buzz groups will be organized for project work in respect to topics selected by course organizer. The experience at individual scientific level will be promoted in order to implement in the group work. A final around table session will serve as a part of the final examination, at which projects will be introduced by each group and questioned by others. The course organizer and and the other tutors will assist during individual group work for project planning etc.
Obligatoriska moment All lectures are obligatory. Special reasons for absence can be discussed, and absence from specific lectures will be compensated through oral examination of the lecture's content by the course teachers.
Examination Oral presentation and a round table discussion on a topic introduced by course leader for a group work. Moreover, a written examination will be performed to answer questions prepared by each lecturer and the course organizer.
