Purpose of the course The main goal of this course is to provide you with a fresh perspective on the cell cycle and advanced approaches that researchers are taking to study this fascinating topic, stimulate your curiosity and inspire your own research.
During the course we will develop and practice key academic skills that you will need throughout your careers, such as listening actively to and digesting scientific presentations, proposing experiments, and providing constructive criticism.
Intended learning outcomes By the end of the course you will be able to:
1. Understand the major principles of cell cycle control
2. Display a clear overview of the relevance of the cell cycle for health and disease
3. Be familiar with state-of-the-art technologies used for cell cycle studies
4. Be capable of designing experiments for studies on cell cycle for your research project and present it to your peers
Contents of the course The cell cycle is the combination of processes that lead to cell division. Cell cycle control has profound implications for growth, development and disease. In this course, we will bring you from the core concepts on cell cycle control to its role in development and disease, with a special focus on cancer. We will show you front-line research in this field and cover both areas of traditional interest (e.g. checkpoints, mitosis and meiosis) and areas of emerging importance (e.g. epigenetics and chromosome biology, cell growth and development, and deregulation of the cell cycle in cancer). We will introduce you to cutting-edge technologies in relation with cell cycle research, including flow cytometry, life cell imaging, and single-molecule DNA and RNA FISH visualization methods.
The course will have a balanced composition of scientific seminars, technology-oriented lectures, hands-on workshops and group-work activities.
Teaching and learning activities Teaching will be based on the following activities:
1. The students are supposed to actively participate in the lectures given by experts in the field.
2. We will have three hands-on workshops (flow cytometry, single-molecule RNA FISH, and image analysis), where the students will learn based on a problem-solving approach.
3. Each student will write an individual short essay and will receive feedback from the teachers.
4. The students will have a group-assignment: to prepare, present and peer-review posters that illustrate new ideas acquired during the course.
Compulsory elements All activities (lectures, research seminars, hands-on workshops, individual written assay, group work and poster presentations) are compulsory. If you are unable to attend, you should discuss with the course organisers how this can be compensated.
Examination The students will be examined through:
1) and individually written assignment and
2) a poster presentation.
Literature and other teaching material We will provide recommended reading material consisting of scientific articles (reviews and original research articles) in good advance of the course according to the recommendations from the lecturers and course organizers.
