Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After the course the students should be able to:
Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of the field of chronic inflammation.
Critically evaluate recent findings in the field of chronic inflammation, synthesize and present this information in the form of online presentations and through interactive participation within a discussion forum.
Evaluate the appropriateness of research design, controls selected, techniques used, the statistics employed, results generated in their own research project and within those of other scientists within the field.
Demonstrate the ability to contextualize new research knowledge in the field of chronic inflammation and whether these results might lead to new research or to new clinical applications.
Understand the benefit of wide and multifaceted sharing and debating of knowledge between research scientists.
Contents of the course The course is conducted on a web-based platform allowing real-time online presentation and discussion about chronic inflammation. Five recently published articles within the field of chronic inflammation will be posted once a month. Each student in turn will submit a presentation including a synopsis of the research findings, and an opinion about the critical design, significance and interpretation of the presented results, followed by an online discussion forum for a defined period of time (10 days). Each student is expected to participate at least three times for each forum for each research article.
Subject-specific national and international experts within each research field will be invited to take part in the online discussion forum, with a view to adding expert knowledge and to stimulate/inspire the participating doctoral students. The lecturers will thus lead the discussions, give their views on selected papers, and help improve the students' skills of understanding and debating current topics of inflammation.
Teaching and learning activities 1. All students in the course will be provided with instructions on how to access Linkedin for an online discussion.
2. In the first week of each month the students will receive selected articles for reading by emails. The students have two weeks to read the article, prepare a synopsis and to formulate specific questions for the discussion forum.
3. During the third week, the lecturers and students start the web-based discussion: paper summary, understanding, arguments, etc. It is mandatory that every student posts at least 3 questions and 3 answers/comments/arguments.
4. During the last week of the month, 20 students will be divided as 4 groups and one student from each group will be designated as facilitator to organize a one-hour online discussion. Upon completion of 5 papers, all the 20 students have one chance to be the facilitator. A report needs to be uploaded from each group (1 A4 page).
Compulsory elements The students are expected to actively participate the discussion for all selected articles, post questions/answers/comments/arguments and a short group report. Participation will be monitored by the course organisers and relevant individual feedback provided as required.
Examination The student will be examined by his/her written report when he/she serves as the facilitator for the online group discussions.
