| Intended learning outcomes | After successfully completing this course you as a student are expected to be able to: - explain and contrast central concepts in epidemiological and sociological life-course research. - in a general way, explain strengths and weaknesses in common methods and study designs used in sociological life-course research (with focus on the event-history analysis) and epidemiological study designs (with focus on the cohort design). - identify and explain possible sources of bias in epidemiological and sociological life-course research. - describe theoretical models for causation and discuss the principles of causal mechanisms. - apply knowledge, skills and scientific approach when critically reviewing scientific literature within epidemiological and sociological life-course research as well as when designing and analysing studies in these fields. Learning outcomes are classified according to Bloom¿s taxonomy: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. | Contents of the course | The course introduces central concepts and general principles regarding design, methods, analysis, and interpretation of register-based epidemiological and sociological life-course studies. |
| Teaching and learning activities | The course is given as a fulltime course during five course days and is arranged within SINGS (Swedish Interdisciplinary Graduate School in Register-Based Research). The course focuses on active learning, i.e., putting knowledge into practice and critically reflecting upon the knowledge, rather than memorizing facts. Different strategies for teaching and learning, such as lectures, various forms of group assignments on selected topics, and individual tasks will be used. |
| Compulsory elements | The examination tasks are compulsory. |
| Examination | To pass the course, the student has to show that the learning outcomes have been achieved. Assessments methods used are group assignments along with written individual tasks. The examination is viewed as contributing to the development of knowledge, rather than as a test of knowledge. Students who do not obtain a passing grade in the first examination will be offered a second chance to resubmit the examination within two months of the final day of the course. |
