Purpose of the course | |
Intended learning outcomes | After the course the students should: Be able to show an understanding of the modern view of cancer. Be able to explain the basic foundations of cancer biology as well as discuss and have a basic understanding about advanced problems in cancer biology. They should have an idea about the current most important problems to solve in cancer, to improve diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The overall aim of the course is to form a bridge between pre-clinical and clinical aspects of tumor biology and oncology for PhD students. |
Contents of the course | This course is a basic introduction to modern cancer research and its implications in clinical cancer management. The course will describe the causes as well as the consequences of the transformation of a normal cell into its malignant counterpart, in order to create an understanding of cancer --from molecule to patient-, eventually also discussing the role of the hallmarks of cancer in the management and treatment of malignant diseases and the outline of translational research. The topics of the course include genetics, the cell cycle, apoptosis, diagnostics and treatment, all topics presented from the cancer perspective. |
Teaching and learning activities | The course consists of lectures, group work and examination. Full time during one and a half week. |
Compulsory elements | The clinically oriented seminars and rounds as well as group work and examination are compulsory. Single missed occasions can be compensated during the course after discussion with the course director. |
Examination | Oral examination with focus on the understanding of concepts, relations and how problems are dealt with in cancer research. |
