Kursens syfte To give course participants the possibility to acquire a solid knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles in immunology, the current use of immunology in disease treatment and prevention, and how experimental research is performed in the field.
Kursens lärandemål By the end of the course, the course participant is expected to be able to:
• Define and explain the key concepts of immunology, including the innate and adaptive immune systems, antigen presentation, T cell and B cell activation, and antibody production.
• Describe different types of immune responses and how they are regulated.
• Explain the role of the immune system in health and disease, including infectious diseases, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.
• Design experiments to investigate immunological questions.
• Interpret and analyze immunological data.
• Communicate immunological concepts and findings to others.
Kursens innehåll The course will cover immunological mechanisms within the innate and adaptive immune responses, and their regulation in both health and disease. We will cover how the immune system can be studied and what experimental models are used. Emphasis will be given to discuss the current use of immunology in disease treatment and prevention.
Arbetsformer The course runs daytime for one week full-time with a mix of lectures by invited scientists, group assignments, as well as individual studies. Participants will prepare and give oral presentations. Active participation that allows interaction between the participants will be promoted.
Based on lectures and seminars given by researchers in the immunology field, the students will create a concept map of the key concepts of immunology. The participants will interpret and analyse data from scientific publications, they will then discuss together and possibly with the article’s authors. Course participants will also design a research plan to relevant immunological questions. Constructive feedback and formative assessment that supports learning are included during active participation in all parts of the course.
Obligatoriska moment In order to achieve the learning outcomes all participants are expected to be present and active the whole week. The group assignments, the oral presentations by the participants and the following general discussion between all participants are compulsory. Students that are absent from these parts will have to individually submit a written presentation of the subject according to the instructions of the course organizer.
Examination Group assignment will also be presented orally and followed by a general discussion between all participants. A summative assessment including an individual written assignment is carried out at the end of the course. All students are individually assessed.
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel Recommended literature: Abul K. Abbas, Andrew H. Lichtman and Shiv Pillai: Basic Immunology: Functions and Disorders of the Immune System. 6th edition. (Elsevier – Health Sciences Edition).
Lecture handouts and link to various resources will be uploaded to the course website.
