| Purpose of the course | The aim of the course is that the participants acquire basic knowledge about qualitative research methods including ethical aspects. Hereby the course provides a good foundation for methodological choices and further development of knowledge of specific qualitative methods. The course is suitable for PhD students who plan to use qualitative methods in their thesis as well as for PhD students who do not have qualitative studies in their research plan. |
| Intended learning outcomes | When completing the course the student should be able to:
- Account for the underpinning principles for decisions regarding choice of research methods in general, and in qualitative data collection and data analysis specifically. - Reason scientifically about trustworthiness, credibility and validity in qualitative research. - Account for what characterizes qualitative data and the research questions qualitative methods can answer. - Reason scientifically about different methods of data collection and analysis in relationship to qualitative data and about the relevance of qualitative methods in health care sciences. - Formulate a research question, related to his/her own research area, which can be answered with qualitative methods. |
| Contents of the course | - Scientific and philosophical foundations of qualitative research.
- Methods for qualitative data collection and analysis that are commonly used in health care sciences. - Credibility and validity in qualitative research. - Ethics in qualitative research |
| Teaching and learning activities | The course uses various teaching methods such as lectures, seminars, group work, individual work, peer-learning and self-study work. |
| Compulsory elements | Participation in lectures and seminars is mandatory. Absence from seminars is compensated by a written review on a topic related to the seminar content. |
| Examination | The course is formative examined through active participation in seminars. The course is summative examined through an individual written assignemnt, an oral presentation of the assignment and peer-review of a fellow student's assignment. |
