Purpose of the course The course includes features of a successful grant application, and how to effectively communicate research both to peers within academia as well as to a wider audience. The course is focused on the area of register-based research.
Intended learning outcomes After successfully completing this course you as a student are expected to be able to:
- when writing a grant proposal, incorporate essential components of a strong and successful grant proposal, and common problems to avoid,
- effectively and persuasively communicate your research to peers within academia,
- write an informative summary, understood by researchers working in the same or related fields as well as a lay audience,
- identify weaknesses in a written project outline and justify how specific components can been improved after modifications.
Contents of the course Focus will be on the fundamental elements of a grant proposal, such as the objectives, methodology, evaluation, and assessments. Practical application of the knowledge will be done by formulating a project outline, including a summary, based on your own doctoral project. Constructive feedback from peers and experts in the area is an essential part of the course.
Teaching and learning activities Sessions will combine presentations with group discussions, assignments, and proposal writing. Different strategies for teaching and learning, such as lectures and practical assignments, on individual and group level, will be used. The course focuses on active learning, i.e. putting knowledge into practice and critically reflecting upon the knowledge, rather than memorising facts. Participants are expected to actively participate in all parts of the course.
Compulsory elements The written individual examinations.
Examination The course grade is based on the individual examination. The written examination will be performed as a take-home examination, and it will be based on a written proposal of your own doctoral project. The examination is viewed as contributing to the development of knowledge, rather than a test of knowledge. Students who do not obtain a passing grade in the first examination will be offered a second examination within two months of the final day of the course. Students who do not obtain a passing grade at the first two examinations will be given top priority for admission the next time the course is offered.
Literature and other teaching material Suggested readings and other course material will be distributed during the course.
