Purpose of the course The purpose of the course is to provide doctoral students with the knowledge necessary to make the outmost of the doctoral education at KI.
Intended learning outcomes Upon completion of the course the doctoral students should:

• Be fully familiar with the rules for doctoral education at KI
• Understand how doctoral education is organized at KI
• Know where to obtain more information on doctoral education at KI
• Know how to document and handle their research data in a correct way
• Know the basics about General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) principles and rights related to the processing of personal data
• Know how to use sources in a clear, correct and effective manner
• Know how to avoid plagiarism and understand how unintentional plagiarism may occur
• Be able to identify why sustainable development goals (SDGs) are important and relevant
• Describe how KI impacts and can contribute to the SDGs
• Be able to give examples of some targets and indicators for selected SDGs
• Describe core pedagogical concepts of teaching and learning in higher education
• Recognize general aspects of how to facilitate student learning in different teaching contexts
Contents of the course The doctoral student will learn about:

• The process, content and expected outcomes of doctoral education at KI and other important aspects of the doctoral education like responsibilities and support functions
• Research documentation and handling of research data
• How to use sources for their research and learning activities
• The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
• The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
• Learning and teaching in higher education
Teaching and learning activities The course includes several online modules with information texts and short films in Canvas, with quizzes, as well as a scheduled digital occasion (half a day approximately) with oral presentations and discussions.
Compulsory elements All Canvas modules must be completed and passed, and each doctoral student needs to have attended the scheduled presentations and discussions within the first year after doctoral registration.
Examination The online quizzes have to be passed before attendance of the scheduled presentations and discussions.
Literature and other teaching material Participants are required to read the latest update of "Rules for doctoral education at KI" in advance and to watch relevant webinars and related documents. Reference to other relevant literature is given at the introduction.
