Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After completing the course the participants should:
Be able to account for the biology of normal and malignant mesenchymal cells
Get knowledge on the genetic, diagnostic, pathology and treatment of sarcomas.
Be able to understand and account for the epidemiology of sarcoma, the histological subtypes and their grade.
Have acquired a deeper understanding of the sarcoma clinical management by meeting the patient and the treating team.
Have acquired an insight into the challenges of the clinical management of patients affected.
Be able to account for novel potential therapies for sarcoma and ongoing clinical trials.
Contents of the course The following topics will be covered: Biology of the normal mesenchymal cell. Epidemiology , pathology , genetic hallmarks and oncogenic pathways of sarcoma tumors. The sarcoma progenitor cell. Animal models of sarcoma Radiological and histopathological and molecular diagnosis with practical demonstrations. Treatment: Surgery, Radiation, Chemoherapy. Targeted therapy: GIST as a model. Emerging targeted therapies .The sarcoma patient.
Teaching and learning activities The course will include daily lectures holded by experts in different sarcoma topics combined with meetings with the sarcoma treating team (Sarcoma Center Karolinska).
This include: Visits to the pathology, surgery, and oncology departments. The participants will presence a sarcoma surgery, filmed and shown in seminar rooms in real time.
Compulsory elements Presence at the clinical demonstrations is obligatory and cannot be compensated for.
Examination Group presentation of case studies.
