Established by The Board of Doctoral Education
Established 2011-03-07
Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes The intended learning outcomes of this course are that the students by the end of the study period the student should be able to:
- Describe mechanisms involved in epithelial cell de-differentiation and migration during development
- Critically evaluate literature on cancer cell migration and invasion
- Reflect over similarities and differences in cell migration during development and in cancer
- Describe roles of inflammation in cancer cell migration and invasion
- Design a project related to cell migration and invasion, and present a research plan describing the project, both on paper and orally.
Contents of the course The course provides up-to-date insight into mechanisms involved in tumor cell migration and invasion. In particular, the following topics will be discussed: Signaling pathways and transcriptional mechanisms regulating tumor cell migration; Crosstalk between TGF-beta and stem cell pathways in tumor cell migration and invasion; Pro-migratory signals from the tumor microenvironment; Parallels between tumor cell migration and epithelial cell migration during development.
Teaching and learning activities The course will be given in the form of lectures and group seminars/discussions. The aim of the lectures is to support students in gathering knowledge and inspiration for the group seminars. The aim of the group seminars is to support the capacity of students to critically discuss and evaluate literature relevant to the course, formulate a working hypothesis and design a research plan.
Compulsory elements Students should attend at least 80% of lectures and group seminars to be approved. Oral presentations on the last day of the course are obligatory. Absence is compensated according to instructions from the course leader.
Examination Students will be examined through written and oral presentations during the last two days of the course. According to the intended learning outcomes students will be examined for their capacity to describe signaling mechanisms involved in tumor cell migration and invasion, to critically evalute relevant literature, to draw parallels between cell migration during development and in disease.
Literature and other teaching material Seminal scientific articles related to tumor cell migration and invasion.
