Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After the the course the students will be able to write scientific manuscripts in English for publication in journals, choose words, structure a sentence and use punctuations properly, write clearly and concisely, maximize information and minimize words, organize a manuscript in paragraphs, present data effectively, review iterature and write a discussion, summarize effectively, understand the guidelines of authorship and the process of choosing an appropriate journal and submission of a manuscript, and write a rebuttal letter to address the comments of the referees.
Contents of the course 1. Basic aspects of sentence structure. Choice of words. Writing in the active voice
2. Basic skills of writing. Punctuations. Tips for clarity and brevity
3. How to maximize information and minimize words. How to organize a manuscript
4. How to present data and describe tables and figures effectively
5. How to review the literature and write an effective discussion
6. Guidelines for authorship; choice of journals and submission of manuscript
7. How to address the comments of the referees.
Details are as follows:
Day 1.
Lecture 1. Introduction. Basic aspects of sentence structure. Choice of words. Writing in the active voice.
Group activity One:
Editing exercise: revise sentences and change words for clarity and brevity
Read a selected chapter of Successful Scientific Writing
Day 2.
Lecture 2. How to maximize information and minimize words.
Group activity Two:
Choose a lengthy article (2000+ words) from any magazine. Rewrite it about 500 words.
Read a selected chapter of Successful Scientific Writing

Day 3.
Lecture 3. Basic skills of writing. Punctuations. Tips for clarity and brevity.
Group activity Three:
Write an introduction of your current focus of research. Peer review of the writings.
Home work: Read a specified chapter from Successful Scientific Writing
Conference 1. Discussion on writing exercises

Day 4
Lecture 4: How to present data and describe tables and figures effectively
Group activity Four: Discuss specified journal articles that describe data in different ways.
Home work: Prepare methods and result section of your ongoing manuscript. Read a specified chapter from Successful Scientific Writing.
Day 5
Lecture 5: How to review the literature and write an effective discussion.
Group activity Five: Write a short review on any topic in your area of research.
Examination:


Teaching and learning activities 1. Lectures will be in small groups and interactive
2. In group activity, students will work in small groups (3-5) on given assignments
3. Home work will include reading specified chapters from specified books
4. Classroom exercises will include writing of short reports and peer review
5. Conferences will include editing of writing and discussion on how to rewrite
6. Students will submit a written manuscript/report in English
Supervisor will facilitate group activities, discussions and the overall learning process
Compulsory elements All participants will have to submit a written report/manuscript by the end of the course
Examination Students will be given an assignment to write a text in English (about 1000 words).
