Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After the course the students will be able to independently
¿ Discuss theories on early speech and communication development
¿ Discuss the impact of adverse conditions on the development
¿ Critically review current research in the area of early speech and communication development related to different adverse conditions
¿ Analyse and explain speech and communication development associated with adverse conditions
¿ Discuss possible precursors for disturbed early speech and communication development
¿ Suggest and argue for intervention to improve speech and communication development associated with adverse conditions
¿ Use and argue for current best methodology for examination and analysis of different aspects of early speech and communication
¿ Identify needs for extended knowledge in the area of early speech and communication development associated with adverse conditions
Contents of the course The course will offer a theoretical background regarding normal early speech and communication development and possibe risk factors for a disturbed development, particularly hearing impairment. Furthermore, methodology for assessment of early speech and communication development and actual research related to adverse conditions will be critically reviewed and discussed. Particular focus will be given validity and reliability of methods for assessment and intervention.
Teaching and learning activities Teaching: lectures and seminars at campus. Search and critical review of literature related to seminars and written essay.
Compulsory elements Seminars are compulsory. If the student is unable to attend the seminar, the student has to review the content of the seminar.
Examination Analysis of early speech and communication in a fictive or real case or a group. A written essay with presentation including a theory based discussion. An oral presentation and discussion in the group.
