Swedish title | Patogenes och kliniska aspekter av olika virus infektioner i inflammatoriska sjukdomer |
---|---|
English title | Pathogenesis and Clinical Aspects of Virus infections in Inflammation and Diseases |
Course number | 2465 |
Credits | 3.0 |
Responsible KI department | Institutionen för medicin, Solna |
Specific entry requirements | Basic knowledge in immunology and microbiology is needed |
Grading | Passed /Not passed |
Established by | The Board of Doctoral Education |
Established | 2010-09-27 |
Purpose of the course | |
Intended learning outcomes | After the course the student will have increased knowledge and understand the role of pathogens in inflammatory disease and cancer. The students should understand the role of microbes in inducing inflammation and be able to discuss and demonstrate the different mechanisms that they use to induce inflammatory disease. |
Contents of the course | The course covers clinical aspects as well as virus mechanisms in inflammatory diseases and cancer. The course will give an overview on virus-immunology , virus-epigenetic and molecular mechanisms used by virus in different diseases. The schedule will include lectures, group work, and discussions in which the students are expected to be very active |
Teaching and learning activities | The schedule will include lectures, group work, and discussions in which the students are expected to be very active |
Compulsory elements | The students are expected to attend all lectures. Single missed sessions may be replaced by written tasks adapted to the situation. |
Examination | The students will work in small groups and choose an inflammatory disease to work with and ask the following questions; 1. How could a microorganism participate in the development of this particular disease. 2. What is the evidence that a microorganism could play a role? 3. How could they define the role of a microorganism in the development of the disease of interest? If they detect a pathogen, would such information have a potential impact on patient care? They should prepare a 30 min presentation in which they make an adequate presentation where all three questions above are answered and discussed. Each group should opponent another groups' presentation with questions in the field which can further help to understand the mechanisms of viral infections relevance in different inflammatory diseases. |
Literature and other teaching material | Fields Virology (Fourth edition) by David Knipe and Peter M. Howely, selected chapters, Handouts of relevant published original and review articles covering the current literatures within the relevant research area. | Course responsible |
