Kursens syfte
Kursens lärandemål Knowledge and understanding:
After completion of the course, the graduate student should be able to 1) account for the different microscopy techniques which are being used for imaging of different types of cells and their properties, 2) account for the theoretical bases of different imaging techniques, 3) describe the principles to follow in selecting the suitable imaging technique for a particular scientific problem.
Skills:
The graduate student should be able to 1) describe the principles of operation of different microscopy systems, 2) describe the principles to follow in optimization and problem-solving in the use of different imaging techniques.
Professional attitudes:
The graduate student should be able to 1) evaluate the suitability of different imaging techniques for different types of preparations and scientific problems, 2) evaluate how different imaging techniques have been utilized in scientific articles, 3) critically consider pros and cons of different imaging techniques, 4) summarize and communicate his/her knowledge and understanding to other users of different microscopy systems.
Kursens innehåll Different methods for microscopic imaging, with an emphasis on fluorescence and confocal techniques, will be considered in detail. Techniques for imaging of fixed preparations, as well as live cell imaging of dynamic processes, will also be covered.
Arbetsformer The course duration is one week (full-time, scheduled): Morning lectures (4 hours/day); afternoons - individual studies. One full day: Demonstrations of different imaging systems.
Examination Individual, written exam.
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel "Handbook of Biological Confocal Microscopy", 3rd edition, J.B. Pawley (ed), Springer-Verlag, 2006. Hand-outs and scientific articles distributed during the course.
Obligatoriska moment The compulsory part of the course is a written exam. To compensate for absence the graduate student will have the opportunity to write an extra exam.
