Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After the course, the students will have an overview of modern systems biology and its application to cancer studies.
Students will also be able to apply systems biology tools in biomedical research (databases, analysis of dependencies and networks, computing).
Contents of the course The course will include lectures, seminars and practical training. Lectures will be delivered by scientists actively working in systemic analysis of cancer, development of tools for systems biology studies and in practical applications of systems biology to treatment of cancer. Leading scientists from KI, Stockholm, Sweden, and from abroad will be invited.
The course will include the following blocks:
1. How to define Systems Biology? Overview of the development and current views on the definition of the field of Systems Biology.
2. The modern understanding of cancer origin, development and treatment.
3. Modern tools of systems biology in application to biomedical studies. This block contains practical training in use of tools for a large-scale analysis.
4. Systemic approach to understanding cancer: examples from studies cancer-related regulatory processes.
5. Practical applications of systems biology in drug development: identification of targets and personalization of treatments.
6. Summary of the course.
Teaching and learning activities The course will include lectures, seminars with discussions between students and lecturers, work with literature and practical training in a large-scale analysis.
Compulsory elements Lectures, seminars and practical training sessions are compulsory.
Absence from compulsory parts will be compensated according to instructions by the course organizer; lectures - by a written review of a missed subject, seminars - by discussion with the course organizer or lecturers, and practical training - by experimental work and a written report.
Examination Written examination, which will be designed in a way to ensure that the learning outcomes are reached. Questions for the examination will be prepared in collaboration with lecturers.
After written examination, discussion with students will take place to ensure that all objectives of the course have been achieved.
Literature and other teaching material Students will be provided with a compendium containing articles recommended for each block of the course, summaries of presentations and training protocols.
