Purpose of the course | The course covers basic principles of scientific writing, style and composition that a scientist needs to know and master to successfully communicate and publish research results with focus on article writing. |
Intended learning outcomes | Students who have completed the course should be able to:
• Know and apply the underlying principles of scientific writing and clear composition • Know and apply the elements needed to compose a clear and well-written scientific research article • Identify the major strengths and weaknesses in scientific article writing, including their own • Demonstrate the ability to improve scientific writing through appropriate revision • Demonstrate the ability to review and help other scientists improve their own manuscripts by providing constructive criticism. |
Contents of the course | Lectures and practical exercises covering the structure of a scientific article. Practical exercises cover individual work and revision of different parts of the students' own article (text parts, figures and tables). |
Teaching and learning activities | The course will be web-based (zoom) with lectures and group exercises by zoom. The course will comprise:
•8 -10 hours of lecture and instructions ranging from scientific fundamental writing principles to the different sections of a scientific paper; •12 hours of in-class practical hands-on exercises, including 1 hours of fundamentals individual exercises 10 hours of working with a partner (review and feedback); 1 hour of group work (review and feedback) •2-3 hours of individual homework/preparation on 4 days, composing brief versions of the introduction, figure or table, materials and methods, results, and discussion •Instructor’s feedback on abstracts |
Compulsory elements | Submission of the manuscript according to the course timeline.
Mandatory presence at all zoom-based lectures and group exercises. Motivated absence can be disscussed with the course organiser and compensation is possible if the absence does not exceed more than 25% of the dedicated time to lectures and group work |
Examination | 1) Submission of an improved revision of abstract, introduction, and sections of the results and discussion of a scientific manuscript in response to constructive criticism, edits, and comments from the other course participants.
2) Submission of a final version of an abstract of a manuscript after instructor feedback and review. |
