Purpose of the course | The objective of this course is to provide the participant with tools to deepen his or her understanding of medical research ethics and good research practice; and to enhance the participants ability to critically discuss and reflect upon ethical questions that can derive from research; and thereby provide the participant with enhanced possibilities to reflect on ethical aspects of his or her own research. |
Intended learning outcomes | After having completed the course, the participant should:
- be able to give an account of important research ethical theories and principles. - be able to identify, analyze and discuss ethical problems in research on humans and animals. - have an ethical approach to research. |
Contents of the course | The course includes the following:
- Important research ethical theories and principles. - Ethical guidelines on how to conduct research, such as the Helsinki Declaration. - Cases of research that are problematic from an ethical point of view. - Ethical aspects concerning research on humans. - Informed consent and its ethical basis. - Ethical aspects concerning research on animals, including arguments for and against using animals for research purposes, as well as ""the three R:s"". - Deviations from good research practice, fraud, fabricated data and plagiarism - Conflicts of interest in research - Handling of authorship in scientific writing |
Teaching and learning activities | - This is a web course
- Reading of mandatory and recommended literature. - Written assignments, e.g. written ethical reflection concerning the participants' own research - Group discussions (on a learning management system) |
Compulsory elements | All tasks and assignments are mandatory. |
Examination | The course is built on active participation. For a passing grade, the participant is required to have satisfactorily completed all assignments, including submissions in different discussion forums; and a written research ethical reflection preferably concerning the participants own research. |
