Purpose of the course Scientific communication relies on written and oral presentation skills. The purpose of the course is to enable doctoral students to learn about the fundamentals of scientific communication, applying these to writing a biosketch, and to effective presentations, which they practice in front of an audience to become a skilled communicator.
Intended learning outcomes After this course the students will be able to present scientific results effectively and clearly, reflecting over different communication formats, target groups, supporting media and situations. Students who have completed the course will be able to show a basic understanding of clear scientific communication, including composing a biosketch, and conducting an oral scientific presentation, adapted to the audience's level of competence.
Contents of the course This course consist of three parts. The first part lays the foundation for clear and effective scientific communication
- written and verbal. It then applies these fundamental principles to writing a informative biosketch and to giving
an effective scientific presentation to peers, with hands-on practice on all three parts of the course.
Teaching and learning activities Interactive lectures and applied written and oral practice sessions, group work and presentations.
Compulsory elements Attendance is mandatory for lectures, the group work and presentations. Possibility for compensation for absence by performing an alternative task needs to be discussed with the course leader.
Examination Each doctoral student will participate in class exercises and receive formative assessment on their performance. In addition, each participant will receive formative and summative assessment after revisions and hold one presentation for the course leader and the other NatiOn research school participants.
