Purpose of the course | The genome is vulnerable to damage from intra- and extracellular sources such as spontaneous errors in DNA replication, oxidative species generated by cell metabolism, exposure to radiation and chemicals. Organisms need to maintain genome stability, but must allow mutational changes to drive adaptation and evolution. Genetic instability is a characteristic of most cancer cells. Cancer frequently results from damage to multiple genes controlling cell division and tumor suppressors. The purpose of this course is to learn about the evolutionary conserved pathways that maintain genome integrity and how failure to regulate these pathways leads to cell transformation and cancer. |
Intended learning outcomes | After the course, the students should be able to explain and compare the different strategies and mechanisms that eukaryotic cells use for maintaining genomic integrity. The students should also be able to discuss and evaluate the interplay between genomic instability and illness/health. |
Contents of the course | Strategies and molecular mechanisms used for maintaining genomic integrity in eukaryotic cells during cell cycle progression, chromosome segregation and in response to DNA damage will be presented, as well as different sources of genomic instability (endo- and exogenous). Special focus will be put on chromosome structure, oncogene-driven damage, checkpoints, and recombination. Current methods/techniques to study these processes will be described, and the influence of genomic instability on illness and health discussed. |
Teaching and learning activities | The course is based on lectures (12h) and research seminars (4h) given by experts in the field, individual and group studies of research articles (14h) and presentations of these (6h). |
Compulsory elements | Both lectures and the group projects are compulsory. Absence from any of these should be compensated
for in agreement with the course director. |
Examination | The final course assessment will be based on formative and summative assessment during the discussions in connection to the seminars and lectures and during the oral presentation of a research paper. |
Literature and other teaching material | Recent adequate scientific and review articles. | Course responsible |
