Purpose of the course | The course covers basic principles of scientific writing style and composition that a scientist needs to know and master in order to successfully communicate and publish research results. |
Intended learning outcomes | Students who have completed the course should be able to: -Identify the major strengths and weaknesses in scientific writing, including their own -Demonstrate the ability to improve scientific writing through appropriate revision -Demonstrate the ability to help other scientists improve their own manuscripts by providing constructive criticism |
Contents of the course | Revising a manuscript or published article that, preferably, the student him/herself has written, focusing on the structure, language, tables and figures, title, abstract and references. |
Teaching and learning activities | Major principles discussed during Writing Science (course code 2590) will be recapitulated the first morning. In the afternoons, the course participants will evaluate a manuscript or published article , concentrating on different sections (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, etc.) each day. This work will be done individually or in groups, with teacher support. On the following mornings, these evaluations will be discussed, and the authors will have a chance to revise. On the final afternoon, there will be a general discussion and course evaluation. |
