Kursens syfte | The course will equip healthcare and life science researchers with tools and knowledge to innovate services for patients, create companies based on their research ideas, or bring their research ideas into existing companies. As such, you will learn how to commercialise research into business ventures, and also learn to innovate services in a clinical setting. |
Kursens lärandemål | After completion of the course the participant shall be able to: - Demonstrate an understanding of the opportunities of health innovation, and entrepreneurship for utilisation of research - Apply their scientific background together with new knowledge in health innovation to address challenges and develop services and products within a) clinical setting and b) biopharma/medtech setting - Use business and design tools for ideation and feasibility studies; to develop, prototype and test solutions to user needs - Develop a business plan based upon a research idea and communicate a business plan to people within the start-up world - Demonstrate an understanding of how a Tech Transfer Office, and other innovation support actors, can support the commercialisation - Apply the basics in financing a start-up from private and governmental funding bodies - Discuss and argue for different types of intellectual property and patent strategies, - Assess their skills in health-innovation, reflect on their utilisation of research, and the opportunities of combining being a scientist and a health innovator/entrepreneur. |
Kursens innehåll | The course will cover different health innovation aspects In module 1, we will elaborate in depth on innovation concepts and on venture development and team building. Med tech cases will be presented, discussed and solved within groups. Participants will get an overview about different funding agencies as well as a couple of venture capital examples within life science/healthcare. In module 2, one will follow up on the cases and add more knowledge on legal matters, from intellectual properties to patents and licencing. The role of a Tech Transfer Office will be explained and opportunities to support research projects will be shown. You will work in your groups and present your own solutions to the cases provided during the course. Finally, module 3 will focus mostly on innovation strategies, business tools and possible developments. You will actively get training on a tool merging lean business development and design thinking. In groups, you will have to manage to take your idea into an entrepreneurial discovery journey to identify key factors such as value proposition, stakeholders, lean canvas, which will guide you towards a possible future application/commercialization. |
Arbetsformer | The teaching will be held in Oslo (module 1), in Trondheim (module 2) and in Stockholm (module 3). The course will consist of lectures, workshops and extensive group work. Before the course starts in Oslo, you will be divided into groups of 4-6 with a mix of participants from the involved universities. Case based work in small groups is a cornerstone. |
Obligatoriska moment | All teaching and learning activities including the examination are mandatory. Compensation for absence has to be agreed upon with the course organizers in advance. You have to have participated in at least 80 % of the educational activities to be allowed to take the exam. |
Examination | The examination will be based on the following: Oral group presentations related to cases Innovation project presented in the format of a ""scientific poster"" and an oral presentation to pitch your innovation project. The project may be from your own research or developed during the course. Written individual report (2-3 pages) in which you reflect on your main learning outcomes from the course and how you may utilize this new learning in your career. |
