Purpose of the course | To introduce classical statistical concepts and methods with emphasis on methods used in epidemiology. |
Intended learning outcomes | Have a good understanding of the role statistics play in medical research, both randomised and non-randomised research. Understand the principles of probability theory and probability distributions. Understand the principles of hypothesis testing, p-values, and confidence intervals. |
Contents of the course | Basic concepts are introducet during lectures, and understanding of the concepts is trained through computer-aided excersises. An introduction to statistical software (STATA) is given. Students also learn to perform simple bistatistical calculations such as mean values, medians and proportions, to set up frequency tables, and to perform basic parametric and non-parametric tests used in both randomised and non-randomised research. |

Compulsory elements | Attendance at lectures and computer-assisted exercises/labs is compulsory. Absence must be compensated through attendance at a subsequent class or per agreement with the course director. |
