Purpose of the course The purpose of the course is to prepare doctoral students for their research studies at Karolinska Institutet. More specifically, the doctoral students will get to know about expectations, the process, support functions and outcomes for doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet. Moreover, students will reflect on how to manage the doctoral student-supervisor relationship in a constructive way.
Intended learning outcomes After the course the doctoral students should:
1. Know the requirements concerning careful research documentation, secrecy and data protection.
2. Be familiar with Karolinska Institutet's expectations concerning research integrity and know what cheating and plagiarism is and how to avoid those practices.
Contents of the course An introduction of the prerequisites as well as the process and outcomes of doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet.

Information concerning research integrity, cheating and plagiarism.

An introduction in information secrecy, research documentation, and data safety.

Information on various support functions at Karolinska Institutet in doctoral education.

Information on The Doctoral Students' Association, the Doktorandombudsman, and reflections on the doctoral student - supervisor relation.

An introduction to various resources for doctoral students at the Karolinska Institutet University Library.
Teaching and learning activities The course will include one web based day and half a day with oral presentations.
Compulsory elements All students at Karolinska Institutet admitted to doctoral level/third-cycle education from July 1, 2009 have to participate in a general and compulsory introduction. The compulsory introduction does not entitle for any credits, but has to be completed within the first year after registration. Absence has to be compensated by participation in a later introduction.
Examination The relevant online tests have to be passed before attendance of the introduction days at KI.
Literature and other teaching material Participants are required to read the latest edition of ""Rules for doctoral/third level education at Karolinska Institutet"" in advance and to watch relevant webinars and related documents before attendance of the introduction days at KI. Reference to other relevant literature is given at the introduction.
