Kursens syfte Skeletal tissues are intimately linked with a number of stem cells including hematopoietic and mesenchymal. The purpose of the course is to help the doctoral student and postdoctoral fellows advance their knowledge in skeletal biology in general, therapeutic mechanisms involving in newly developed treatment of skeletal disorders, bone and cartilage regeneration as well as bone marrow hematopoietic stem cell niche including mesenchymal stem cells.
Kursens lärandemål After completing the course the student will be able to:
-Understand the main regulatory principles for hematopoietic, and mesenchymal stem cells in bone
-Understand the concept of stem cell niche.
- Connect bone marrow stem cell niche with specific cancers
-Understand the main principals of skeletal biology, including main skeletal tissues, cell types, identity, origin, development and their function for maintaining homeostasis.
-Describe the basics of skeleton regeneration, including bone and cartilage tissue.
-Account for widely used models to assess mechanisms involved in skeletal tissue development, regeneration and interplay between mesenchymal cells in bone with hematopoietic cells.
-Account for novel technologies and approaches in regenerative medicine in connection to skeletal biology, hematopoiesis and cancer.
-Integrate the obtained knowledge in the student's own doctoral project.
Kursens innehåll The course covers key concepts in translational research on mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells, skeletal biology and regeneration approaches therein. This includes a general overview of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, bone cells, bone formation and development, regeneration of skeletal tissues, tooth development, bone marrow and biology of mesenchymal stem cells. The course will comprise one day of overview lectures followed by monthly Stockholm Skeletal Seminar Series, which will be given by expert speakers from Sweden or abroad. The speakers will give an advanced summary of the latest findings in the fields of bone biology and regeneration. Networking with students and speakers is highly promoted in this course during the seminar series.
Arbetsformer Monthly lectures (on site or online video system), formal and informal discussions. After each lecture, there will be an immediate Q-A session in presence of participating senior researchers (about 30min) and Q-A session with the speakers and students only. Presentations of the participants' own research to get feedback from invited experts in the field.
Obligatoriska moment Up to two lectures can be missed, but every missed lecture has to be compensated by literature work according to the course organizer
Examination Examination is designed to facilitate the use of obtained knowledge in the student's own research. We ask students to present their project in connection to the course in a 10 min presentation followed by 10 min discussion with other students or invited experts. The presentation should make a connection between the project and any subject discussed during the course.
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel The course literature will consist of recent original and review papers on selected topics within the field of bone biology, mesenchymal stem cell biology and transplantation as well as the latest articles from the expert lecturers. Articles will be distributed to the students prior to each monthly lecture and the one-day seminar or symposium.
