Särskild behörighet The student must have acquired knowledge of basic tumor biology corresponding to course 1635 ""Basic course in Tumor Biology and Oncology"".
Betygsskala Godkänd/Icke godkänd
Fastställd av The Board of Doctoral Education
Datum för fastställande 2016-09-08
Kursens syfte The main purpose of the course is to provide the students with a global view on gastro-intestinal cancers from both pre-clinical and clinical perspectives, in line with the concepts of translational and multidisciplinary research as well as personalized cancer medicine.
Kursens lärandemål At the end of the course the students should
- critically evaluate the different pathways of carcinogenesis related to the specific cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and pancreas
- understand the concept of multidisciplinary approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with GI cancer and provide examples of personalized cancer medicine
- design a novel research project with the ability to present this project in a well-structured and reflected way (orally and written).
Kursens innehåll The course aims to convey a basic understanding of the genetic, molecular and environmental factors contributing to key gastrointestinal cancer entities (esophagus, stomach, colorectum, pancreas and liver). Students will be introduced to basic diagnostic and treatment algorithms with a special focus on personalized medicine.
Based on a strong translational approach, the learner will not only be updated regarding current molecular oncological concepts but will moreover acquire insights into clinical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures at a tertiary-referral center for cancer patients (e.g. multidisciplinary tumor conference; diagnostic procedures such as endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP, endoscopy; KI microRNA core facility).
Arbetsformer The course will be organized as a three day seminar at the Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge. Beforehand, the students will receive key literature for the preparation of the seminar. Different pedagogical strategies will be applied to facilitate efficient deep learning comprising flipped-classroom pedagogy, case-based learning, team-based learning and lecture-based learning. At the third day each student has to orally present a novel research project which fosters presentation skills. The group will critically discuss the feasibility and novelty of the presented projects (peer-learning). Finally, students will prepare a written summary of the research project simulating manuscript writing and simulate the preparation of grant applications.
Obligatoriska moment Full attendance during the three day course is compulsory. Absence from mandatory parts of the course will be compensated by other activities after discussion with the course leaders.
Examination The course assignment will consist on a formative assessment based on individual presentation as well as a written project, where the students (peer feedback) as well as the course organizers will provide feedback. The course organizers will lead the examination and be responsible for summative individual assessment.
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel The students will be provided with relevant literature (review articles, original publications, references to book chapters).
