| Purpose of the course | The course includes features of a successful grant application as well as common problems to avoid. It also focuses on how to effectively communicate research both to peers within academia as well as to a wider audience. The course is focused on the area of register-based research. |
| Intended learning outcomes | After successfully completing this course you as a student are expected to be able to: - recognize essential components of a typical, successful grant proposal, - write an informative summary, understood by persons working in the same or related fields, - effectively communicate your research both to peers within academia as well as to a wider audience, - identify weaknesses in a written project outline, and highlight how specific components can been improved after modifications. |
| Contents of the course | In this course, focus will be on the fundamental elements of a grant proposal, such as the objectives, methodology, evaluation and assessments. Practical application of the knowledge will be done by formulating a project outline, including a summary, based on your own doctoral project. You will also specifically work on improving the project summary, and practice to orally present your research proposal. |
| Teaching and learning activities | Different strategies for teaching and learning, such as lectures and practical assignments, on individual and group level, will be used. The course focuses on active learning, i.e. putting knowledge into practice and critically reflecting upon the knowledge, rather than memorising facts. Participants are expected to actively participate in all parts of the course. Constructive feedback from peers and experts in the area is an essential part of the course. |
| Compulsory elements | The oral and written individual examinations. |
| Examination | The course grade is based on the two individual examinations, one oral and one written. To pass the course, the student must pass both parts. The oral examination will be performed the last day of the course. The written examination will be performed as a take-home examination, and it will be based on a written proposal of your own doctoral project. The examination is viewed as contributing to the development of knowledge, rather than a test of knowledge. Students who do not obtain a passing grade in the first examination will be offered a second examination within two months of the final day of the course. Students who do not obtain a passing grade at the first two examinations will be given top priority for admission the next time the course is offered. Further information about the examination task will be given during the course. |
