Purpose of the course To provide the course participants with an ideal learning platform for the principles and up-to-date knowledge of haemodynamics, its clinical implications, and the quantitative use of echocardiography in clinical cardiovascular diagnosis and research
Intended learning outcomes After the one-week course, the participants should be able to show a good understanding of the principles of haemodynamics, i.e. fluid (blood) dynamics in a clinical context of health and disease. The participants should be able to accurately use quantitative echocardiography in clinical cardiovascular research among others by learning the pros and cons of the methodology.
Contents of the course The course provides the participants with knowledge and training activities on haemodynamic principles, as well as monitoring and evaluation of effects on flow from changes in pressure, cardiovascular dynamics, dimensions and contractility. Findings at invasive catheterisation are discussed, and how and when echocardiography may replace it noninvasively are addressed. State of the art echocardiography for pre-clinical and clinical use is exemplified.
Teaching and learning activities The course includes:
2 days of lectures and demonstrations:
Lectures:
Haemodynamics and mechanics of fluids
Pulmonary and systemic hypertension in the catheterisation lab
Valvular, ischemic and myocardial disease in the echocardiography lab
Demonstrations:
Langendorff Heart Preparation with Echocardiography
Simulation of Haemodynamics
Echopac-lab work
2.5-day computer simulations and group work:
Each participant should bring their own PC laptop, and 2-3 participants form a working group. Each group will be assigned additional reading, computer simulations, and group work tasks. Each group should draft a proposal of a clinical research project based on a hypothesis generated from the computer simulations performed by the group.
Half-day seminar including examination: Presentation and discussion of assigned group work and the research proposal.
Compulsory elements The participants must attend the lectures and demonstrations, laborations, group work and the presentation/discussion of the group work at the seminar.

The students who have missed any of these sessions can book extra session time within 4 weeks to compensate for the absence.
Examination Presentation and discussion of assigned group work and a written proposal of a clinical research project based on a hypothesis generated from the computer simulations performed by the group. The participants will be individually assessed.
