Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes Upon completion of the course the PhD students have a profound understanding of the positron emission tomography (PET) tracer development process all the way from candidate tracer selection and tracer radiosynthesis to preclinical validation and first time in man studies.
Contents of the course The course will cover the basic principles of PET, radionuclide production, tracer candidate identification, preclinical validation of tracer candidates as well as some regulatory aspects associated with tracer production for clinical studies. Special attention will be given to radiosynthesis methodologies. Case studies will also be presented to illustrate different challenges that may be met in PET tracer development. Internationally recognized experts in the field of molecular imaging will give key lectures during the course.
Teaching and learning activities The course runs full-time for one week and includes a mixture of lectures and seminars. Visits to the PET radiochemistry lab and the imaging facilities at the KI PET Center will also be conducted.
Compulsory elements Participation in all scheduled activities is compulsory. Potential absence from any part of the activities will be compensated for in the form of a written assignment.
Examination Written exam.
Literature and other teaching material The course literature comprises book chapters on the principles of positron emission tomography and PET radiochemistry (Positron Emission Tomography, Springer Verlag, latest edition) as well as journal articles and review papers. A list of the literature will be provided to the students prior to enrolling to the course.
