Kursens syfte
Kursens lärandemål At the end of the course the students should be able to:

- Identify and discuss the mechanisms of malignant transformation by DNA and RNA viruses
- Identify and discuss the mechanisms by which bacteria infections can contribute to tumor development
- Discuss the current status of vaccines against tumor viruses
- Identify and discuss the issues related to pro-carcinogenic viruses/bacteria and immune defense as well as vaccines and treatment of virus- and bacteria- induced tumors
Kursens innehåll The course will present the virus groups presently known to be involved in the development of human cancers, such as Human Papilloma viruses, Hepatitis B and C virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and HHV-8 as well as the major tumors related to these viruses. In addition, mechanisms of bacterial-induced carcinogenesis and bacterial agents involved in cancer development will be addressed. Specific aspects of tumor virology such as mechanisms of viral carcinogenesis, history of tumor virology, tumor viruses and immune defense as well as vaccines against tumor viruses and treatment of virus-induced tumors will also be presented.
Arbetsformer The course will be organized as lectures held by prominent researchers within the field, who will discuss the general concepts of infection and cancer, as well as present cutting edge research and relevant issues that still need to be resolved within the field. Student oral presentation of a scientific paper will complete the teaching and learning activities.
Obligatoriska moment Attendance to the lectures and the oral presentations are compulsory. In special cases, with limited absence, the student can compensate with a written report.
Examination The course assessment will be based on: i) a written examination, and ii) presentation of a scientific article in a format of a journal club.
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel The students will be provided before the starting of the course with relevant and recent review articles that should be read before the start of the course. They will also receive the scientific papers that will be presented as part of the course assessment.
