Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After the course, the students should be able to explain and compare the different strategies and mechanisms that eukaryotic cells use for maintaining genomic integrity. The students should also be able to discuss and evaluate the interplay between genomic instability and illness/health.
Contents of the course Lectures and research seminars given by experts in the field will cover the topics of the course. Strategies and molecular mechanisms used for maintaining genomic integrity in eukaryotic cells during cell cycle progression, chromosome segregation and in response to DNA damage will be presented, as well as different sources of genomic instability (endo- and exogenous). Special focus will be put on chromosome structure, oncogene-driven damage, checkpoints, and recombination. Current methods/techniques to study these processes will be described, and the influence of genomic instability on illness and health discussed. A group project will provide opportunity to active participation by the students.
Teaching and learning activities The course is based on lectures (12h), research seminars (4h), individual and group studies of research articles (14h) and presentations of these (6h).
Compulsory elements Both Lectures and the Group projects are compulsory. Absence from any of these should be compensated
for in agreement with the course director.
Examination The final course assessment will be based on formative assessment during the discussions in connection to the seminars and lectures and on the oral presentation of a research paper.
Literature and other teaching material Recent adequate scientific and review articles
