Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After successfully completing this course you as a student are expected to be able to: Describe the basic organization of the human CNS and its main cell types. Describe and recognize the main features of brain tumors, recognize that the spectrum of brain tumors is different in adult and children. Explain the concept of brain tumor stem cells. Explain why brain tumors are so difficult to treat. Critically discuss and evaluate literature concerning brain tumors.
Contents of the course The course is about brain tumors and their pathology, biology and genetics. A brief review of basic anatomy and the main cell types of CNS with focus on neural stem cells will be given. Mechanisms of brain tumor development is the main part of the course. Classification of brain tumors, risk factors and molecular genetics will also be covered. Clinical aspects of brain tumors will be presented in the form of demonstrations. Invited speakers will introduce the research front with special focus on brain tumor stem cells, brain tumor models in mice, novel technologies and targeted therapies.
Teaching and learning activities The course will be given in the form of lectures, group seminars, demonstrations, and site visits. The aim of the lectures is to support students in gathering the basic as well as more in-depth knowledge about brain tumors. The aim of the group seminars is to support the capacity of the students to critically discuss and evaluate literature relevant to the course. Demonstrations of instrumentation and site visits will help to visualize the current situation in brain tumor research and clinical settings.
Compulsory elements All course activities are compulsory. Absence is compensated for according to instructions from the course leader.
Examination To pass the course, the student has to show that the learning outcomes have been achieved through a compulsory home exam.
Literature and other teaching material A course binder will be distributed that contains a handful of review articles on the topics covered during the course.
