Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After the course students should be able to describe the interplay between culture (in a wide sense of the word) our brain and health, well-being and learning. They shall also be able to explain different scientific paradigms by which such questions are studied. Specifically, students shall be able to 1) give examples of how experience and performance of culture are perceived by the brain, 2) give examples of how culture might be used in prevention, health care and rehabilitation, 3) also give examples where brain and educational science meet and inform each other, 4) discuss possible mechanisms, and 5) propose further studies that will increase and enhance our understanding of the field.
Contents of the course Inspired by the fast development in the cross disciplinary field of culture brain health, we will address questions concerning how activities and experiences in different fields of culture (music, literature, fine arts, physical activity etc) are perceived by and affect the human brain in ways that influence well-being, health, healing and rehabilitation, and also how processes and plastic structures in brain influence learning. The course will cover questions such as how brain perceives culture, brain plasticity, use of culture in health care and rehabilitation, and the crossroad between brain and educational research. The course will touch upon a large number of different sorts of culture, and make students familiar with different scientific paradigms in various academic disciplines studying these phenomena, and wide range of different scientific approaches and techniques.
Teaching and learning activities In average 1-2 lectures each month for five months, each immediately followed by a seminar, 2-3 hrs on each occasion. Lectures and seminars held by internationally leading scientists in the fields, whose work quailify to be presented on the website ""Kulturella hjärnan"". (www.culturalbrain.se).
