5. Recognize signs of discomfort, pain, suffering, and distress in non-human primates.
6. Describe methods of anaesthesia, analgesia, injections, sampling, and euthanasia for non-human primates.

After completion of the course, including the practical demonstration at Astrid Fagraeus Laboratory, the student shall be able to perform experiments on non-human primates.
Contents of the course The content of this course (a compulsory course for those carrying out experiments with non-human primates
without previous qualification) is composed to enable the participants to comply with the Swedish Legislation (New
EU-Directive 2010/63) regarding the use of animals for scientific purposes. It contains web-based lectures on the
requirements of Swedish legislation concerning scientific use of animals, ethical issues, basic
biology, normal behavior of non-human primates, handling of animals, husbandry needs, and enrichment, signs
of discomfort pain and suffering, different experimental methodologies, the basis of disease control
and how to implement hygiene in animal housing and experimental work. The students will accomplish the practical
part of the course at Astrid Fagraeus Laboratory as a demonstration.
Teaching and learning activities The course is divided into two parts. A theoretical part on the web (PingPong) and a practical part organized at Astrid Fagraeus Laboratory as a demonstration, where the student is to perform his/her research.

Physical contacts with the animals and practical performance of the procedures is not allowed during the demonstration.
Compulsory elements Both the theoretical and practical parts of the course are compulsory. The student will need to pass the theoretical
part of the course before he/she can enter Astrid Fagraeus Laboratory.
Examination The examination of the theoretical part will be accomplished online. Each of the course modules will be individually
accessed. For the practical part the student has to be present to the 4 hours demonstration to acquire species-specific knowledge. To pass the course, the student needs to pass both the theorectical and practical demonstration of the course.
