Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes The students will get an overview of the general terms regarding economic evaluation of therapeutic interventions, including introduction to the terminology and sources of data capture in cost-effectiveness evaluation. The students will upon completion of the course be able to understand and discuss the parameters included in a cost-effectiveness analysis, and have an understanding of the Swedish health system and how health economic parameters are evaluated and used as a tool in the introduction of new drugs.
Contents of the course The course will be given as a two-day retreat with full day and evening learning activities.
The first day will give an introduction to the basic assessments in health economic evaluations, including collection of information on quality of life and costs for health care and how this information may be fed into models to predict the cost-effectiveness of an intervention. The unique Swedish setting where real life data can be captures in our many registries will be highlighted.
The second day include an overview of the formal way a new pharmaceutical drug has to complete in order to be available to Swedish patients, including discussions on the real life impact certain rules and tradition may have on patients with chronic diseases.
Teaching and learning activities The course will include lectures, which all will be summarized and discussed during the last 5-10 minutes of each theme, as well as student oral presentations and group discussions.
Compulsory elements The two days and adjacent evening retreat, as well as the written exam are mandatory.
Examination The course examination will include a written exam where the students individually in an essay-style answer will discuss strength and weaknesses of central assessments used in health economic evaluations today, and how these may or may not empower the voice of the patients and affect the outcome of the economic analysis. From the essay it must be clearly demonstrated that the student has gained enough insights and knowledge of the topic discussed during the workshop to also be able build own arguments related to current health care utilization discussions.
