Purpose of the course | |
Intended learning outcomes | Have a good understanding of the role statistics play in medical research. Understand the principles of probability theory and probability distributions. Understand the principles of hypothesis testing, p-values and confidence intervals. |
Contents of the course | The course is offered as part of the KI / SLL research school for clinicians in epidemiology. Basic concepts are introduced during lectures, and understanding of the concepts is trained through computer-aided exercises using statistical software. Students also learn to perform simple biostatistical calculations such as to calculate mean, median and proportions, to set up frequency tables, and to perform basic parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. |

Compulsory elements | Attendance at lectures and computer-assisted exercises / labs is compulsory. Absence can be compensated through attendance at a subsequent class or per agreement with the course director. |
