Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes After completing the course, participants should be able to explain basic genetic and epigenetic concepts and mechanisms, and to some extent be able to apply genetic research methodology on psychiatric questions, and briefly explain the legislation on biobanks.
Contents of the course This course provides an introduction to the field of human molecular genetics, genetic epidemiology and epigenetics. Overview of current knowledge in psychiatric genetics and epigenetics is covered.
Teaching and learning activities The course is offered as a full-time course in one week. Lectures, tutorials, demonstrations and seminars are alternated for optimal elemental result.
Compulsory elements The presence at lectures/tutorials/demonstrations is mandatory, unless corresponding knowledge has been acquired previously by the course participant. Any absence may be compensated for by written report on the concerned subject.
Examination The examination task is carried out individually. The task consists of a presentation of a scientific article on molecular genetics and / or epigenetics in psychiatry in oral and written form. Intended learning outcomes that will be examined include the understanding of basic genetic and /or epigenetic concepts and mechanisms and research methodology in genetics or epigenetics, and the ability to, at basic level, do a critical review of a selected research finding in psychiatric genetics and /or epigenetics.
Literature and other teaching material The course handouts in the form of original research articles and research review articles in the field. The literature list is given at the beginning of the course.
