Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes At the end of the module students will be able to:
- discuss current issues in malaria research, prevention and control in low and middle income countries
- analyse broader context of malaria prevention and control interventions
- explain the importance of the recent pathogenesis of malaria
- understand the management of severe and uncomplicated malaria
Contents of the course Malaria epidemiology, life cycle, morphology, pathogenesis, clinical aspects, diagnostic methods. Principles for therapy and prophylaxis, pharmacology and resistance to antimalarial drugs. Immunology, genetics and vaccines. Entomology and vector control. Public health and socio-economic aspects. New control policies and research strategies.
Teaching and learning activities The course will consist of lectures, seminars and practical sessions
Compulsory elements It is compulsory to attend all the lectures. The practical sessions attendance is not compulsory for students with previous knowledge on the specific skills.
It will be possible to compensate absence by completing individual assignments provided by the course organizer.
Examination Written examination.
