Purpose of the course | |
Intended learning outcomes | After the course, the student will have acquired knowledge and understanding about mechanisms involved in chemical carcinogenesis. The student will be familiar with the methods used to generate data for chemical cancer risk assessment. The student will be able to locate and gather relevant data used for chemical hazard identification. After the course the student will be able to evaluate and discuss scientific data used in chemical hazard identification and cancer risk assessment. |
Contents of the course | Molecular mechanisms for chemical carcinogenesis will be presented. Experimental test models and epidemiological methods to identify carcinogens and to assess the potency of carcinogens will be discussed. Methods and policies used in carcinogen risk assessment will be discussed in connection with group work. The students will perform practical risk assessment in groups. |
Teaching and learning activities | The course consists of lectures, group seminars and group work presentations. |
Compulsory elements | Participation in the group work is mandatory. Absence can be compensated with an individual task. |
Examination | The students will present in an oral and written form a group work and demonstrate their skills in discussing their own work and the work presented by their fellow students. If necessary the presentation is complemented by oral questioning. |
