Purpose of the course
Intended learning outcomes Students who have completed the course should be able to:
-describe strategies for how to write and revise an original scientific article and/or an application for funding
-describe how submitted articles and grant applications are assessed and list both scientific and non-scientific factors that influence the assessment outcome
-choose a method of presenting data (text, table, figure) and motivate that choice
-demonstrate ability to give, take, and make use of constructive criticism
Contents of the course Scientific writing, grant writing, figures and tables, revising structure and style and publication process.
Teaching and learning activities Individual writing and rewriting, lectures, pair and group work, peer and teacher feedback.
Compulsory elements The course writing assignment is obligatory and has to be submitted about 10 days BEFORE course start. All scheduled teaching is compulsory. Absence can sometimes be compensated for by reading and individual work after consultation with course leaders. Absence during group work cannot be compensated.
Examination Writing a grant application (in English) with popular science summary (in Swedish) and rewriting (including references) based on peer and teacher feedback.
Literature and other teaching material A compendium is provided at the beginning of the course.
