Language English
Credits 3.0
Date 2011-03-28 -- 2011-04-08
Responsible KI department Institutionen för neurobiologi, vårdvetenskap och samhälle
Specific entry requirements
Intended learning outcomes After the course, the students will have a basic knowledge of the clinical symptoms and current treatments of the most common neurodegenerative disorders. The students will also have an understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms and the current knowledge or hypothesis/es of the etiology, as well as a general idea of ongoing 'state of the art' research.
Contents of the course Lectures will cover topics including clinical symptoms, diagnosis, pathology, epidemiology, genetics and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as dementias, stroke, brain trauma, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy. Molecular mechanisms and animal models will be presented, including mechanisms for existing and potential treatment strategies.
Teaching and learning activities The course runs daytime for 2 weeks full-time including individual literature studies and one day of preparation for the exam. There will be lectures by invited scientists, and relevant methods will be introduced to the students in laboratory practicals. Literature studies on specific projects will also be performed in groups. The practicals and the topics of literature studies, respectively, will be discussed at the end of the course with all students. The questions and answers in the written exam will be discussed immediately after the exam, to further improve understanding.
Compulsory elements Lab practicals and literature seminars are compulsory. To compensate for absence from lab practicals, the student has to submit a literature study on selected methods and at a later time visit the organizers research lab (or other lab, if agreed upon) to try one of the methods. To compensate for absence from literature studies during the course, a similar study has to be submitted within 2 weeks after the end of the course.
Examination Written exam
Literature and other teaching material The book Neurodegeneration: The Molecular Pathology of Dementia and Movement Disorders, Editor Dennis Dickson, ISN Neuropath Press, Basel, 2003, is recommended.
Scientific reviews, as well as articles and protocols relevant to the methods practiced, will be provided bry the course.
Number of students 12 - 24
Selection of students The selection will be based on the relevance of the course to the research project, and on the time after registration as doctoral student.
More information The course runs at Novum, Huddinge, daytime during 2 weeks. The practicals will concern assays for cell injury, of which you choose those that are most interesting to you.
