Kursens lärandemål | Learning outcomes: After the course, the students should be able to explain and compare the different strategies and mechanisms that eukaryotic cells use in maintaining genomic integrity. The students should also be able to discuss and evaluate the interplay between genomic instability and illness/health. |
Kursens innehåll | Lectures given by experts in the field will cover the topics of the course, such as strategies and molecular mechanisms used for maintaining genomic integrity, including the ubiquitin system, chromosome segregation and progression of the cell cycle. Different sources of genomic instability (endo- and exogenous) will also be presented. Main repair mechanisms found in eukaryotic cells and the importance for Genomic instability in illness/health will be discussed. A group project will provide opportunity to active participation by the students. |
Arbetsformer | The course is based on lectures (13h), a groupwork (9h), individual studies of review articles selected by the speakers (8 h) and research seminars (5 h). |
Obligatoriska moment | Both Lectures and the Group projects are compulsory. Absence from any of these should be compensated for in agreement with the course director. |
Examination | Aquired knowledge will be evaluated by a written exam, based on the lectures given and review articles selected by the speakers, as well as presentations of the group works. |
Kurslitteratur och övriga läromedel | An introduction to genomic integrity can be found in the following litterature: Alberts B. et al. ¿Molecular Biology of the Cell¿, 4. (2002). Cooper G.M & Hausman R.E. ¿The Cell A Molecular Approach¿, 4. (2006). Referencelitterature for the course: Lankenau D-H ¿ Genome Integrity: Facets and Perspectives (Genome Dynamics & Stability)¿ 1. (2006). Scientific Articles and review articles |
Antal studenter | 20 - 26 |
Urval av studenter | Admission to the course is based on the relevance of the course content for the doctoral project and the personal motivation letter to attend the course. |
Övrig information | As speakers at the 2011 Genome Integrity course we are happy to have been able to appoint the following experts in the field: Frank Uhlmann from the UK London research institute, London, Madalena Tarsounas from the CR-UK/MRC Gray institute for Radiation oncology and Biology, Oxford, Karim Labib from The Paterson Institute for Cancer research in Manchester, Wim Vermeulen from Dept of Genetics at The Erasmus MC in Rotterdam as well as a number of outstanding speakers from Karolinska Institute. The course will be held in English at CMB, Berzelius väg 35, A216. |
