Specific entry requirements Knowledge in epidemiology equivalent to ""Epidemiology I: Introduction to epidemiology"" or corresponding courses.
Purpose of the course An increasing share of the population in our countries lives to very advanced age. This calls for a better understanding of the ageing process, identifying possible preventive and treatment strategies to ensure that these extra years of life gained through increased longevity are spent in good health. Geriatric epidemiology approaches these challenges by studying the health and functional status of older populations throughout the entire life span.
Intended learning outcomes The course offers a unique opportunity to learn epidemiological methods and their application to research on aging. After completion of the course, the students should be able to: (1) identify the key determinants of the demographic transition towards more longevous populations, (2) understand the social, psychological and medical aspects of the aging process and the need for multidimensional assessment of older people's health, and (3) assess the methodological challenges posed by the different analytic approaches used in geriatric epidemiology.
Contents of the course The one-week course consists of three parts:
- Part I (1 day) will offer an overview of the determinants and current statistics of population aging. It will also cover the basics of geriatric epidemiology and the critical appraisal of scientific articles in the field.
- Part II (3 days) will present the fundamental aspects of health in older age: cognitive function, physical function, frailty and chronic physical and mental diseases.
- Part III (1 day) will address the main methodological challenges in geriatric epidemiology and key directions for future research in older people's health and wellbeing.
Teaching and learning activities The course structure is built on brief state-of-art lectures followed by seminar discussions in which doctoral students' proactive participation will be required.
Compulsory elements Active attendance is mandatory for lectures and group work. If the student is absent, he or she will be able to compensate the absence by handing in written answers to the key questions that have been discussed during the lectures. Submission of the written assignment will be essential for obtaining the credits.
Examination Group-work for the development of the assignment and pre-post multiple-choice test.
Literature and other teaching material A reading list will be announced before and at the start of the course.
Number of students 10 - 35
Selection of students Selection will be based on 1) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant's doctoral project (according to written motivation), 2) date for registration as a doctoral student (priority given to earlier registration date)
More information The course will be run during week 19, from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The lectures will involve group work and active participation by students. Discussions will be led by both national and international lecturers. The course will be held in the large conference room at the Aging Research Center: ARC, Gävlegatan 16, Plan 7 (Room: Tokyo), 113 30, Stockholm.
