Specific entry requirements
Intended learning outcomes After the completion of the course, the participants will be able to make use of R for exploring and analyzing data sets. More specifically, the participants will be able to manage data sets, perform descriptive data analysis, generate plots for graphical display of data, and to perform tests such as Regression and ANOVA. A very specific goal is to provide the participants with a long-term tool and the guidelines for improving their knowledge on it.
Contents of the course Data sets and formats in R. Descriptive statistics. Graphical display of data. Classical tests. Regression, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis. Experimental design. Graphical display of analysis. Use of documentation in R.
Teaching and learning activities The course consists of lectures, computer excercises and project work.
Compulsory elements Attendance is compulsory in lectures and computer excercises. Absence from obligatory moments is compensated according to the instructions of the course director.
Examination The acquired knowledge and skills will be examined in two ways: by successfully completing computer exercises and by a individual project (analysis of a selected data set; which can be provided by the student).
Literature and other teaching material 1. A Beginner's Guide to R. Zuur AF , Ieno EN, Meesters E. Springer. 2. 3. Statistical Computing: An Introduction to Data Analysis using S-Plus. Crawley MJ. Wiley. 4. Introductory Statistics with R. Dalgaard P. Springer. 5. A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using R. Everitt BS, Hothorn T. Chapman and Hall/CRC. 6.
Number of students 10 - 15
Selection of students Selection will be based on 1) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant's doctoral project (according to written motivation), 2) date for registration as a doctoral student (priority given to earlier registration date).
More information The course takes place at CMB at KI Solna campus, in the seminar room A216. Entrance Berzeliusv 35. The participants are required to bring their own laptop computers with the R software package installed according to the information from the course director.
Additional course leader The course directors are Dr. David Gomez-Cabrero, email, and Dr. Francesco Marabita, email, both at the Department of Medicine, Solna.
