Intended learning outcomes After the completed course, the students will be able to explain and relate the basic components of a good scientific manuscript in the IMRaD format, and demonstrate knowledge on the different linguistic strategies for constructing sentences and paragraphs for improved readability and flow in scientific manuscripts and other communications.
Contents of the course The course consists of two major parts: 1) A creative writing workshop focusing on the use of creative writing techniques for improved communication in science and in general, and in using text as a tool in communication. The creative writing workshop includes writing exercises and readings and discussions. 2) A scientific writing workshop on writing IMRaD style articles including exercises in analysing the structure of published papers. The workshop includes perspectives from an editor's point of view about factors affecting rejection or acceptance of a paper.
Teaching and learning activities The course includes presentations, readings, writing exercises and text analysis exercises.
Compulsory elements The writing and text analysis exercises and readings are obligatory. Absence from compulsory parts is compensated according to the instructions from the course directors.
Examination The students will be examined on the basis of their active participation in individual exercises (writing exercises and IMRaD style article analysis).
Literature and other teaching material A compendium on the IMRaD style manuscripts and reading materials provided by the course organizers.

Selection of students Selection will be based on 1) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant's doctoral project (according to written motivation), 2) date for registration as a doctoral student (priority given to earlier registration date)
More information This writing course is organised as an intensive weekend camp. Participants will be able to enhance their creative and professional writing skills with instructors from Harvard Medical School, Uppsala University and Karolinska Institutet in a relaxed small group setting. The course is free of cost with basic summer camp food. The participants will live in shared accommodation and must bring their own bed linen and towels. Solvik is located in a beautiful archipelago setting in Värmdö, just half an hour from central Stockholm with public transport from Slussen.
