| Specific entry requirements | 150 credits in medicine, biomedicine, odontlogy or chemisty. Alternatively 150 credits from studies in engineering or science with a profile in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, or medical technology. |
| Intended learning outcomes | At the end of this course you will be able to: - Demonstrate the concept of nanomedicine and describe enabling applications of its use. - Compare different in vivo imaging methods and evaluate their applicability to studying an infection or inflammation. - Be up to date on the forefront of research in the areas of nanomedicine. - Apply the concept of nanomedicine to your own research area. |
| Contents of the course | The course will give an overview of the state-of-the-art in nanomedicine, with a focus on both the medical and engineering aspects. The latest tools and methods in nanomedicine will be presented, as applied to the areas of infection, inflammation, and immunology. |
| Teaching and learning activities | This is an intensive lecture course taught by experts in the field. Lecturers from Karolinska Institutet, Keio University and Beijing University will participate. |
| Compulsory elements | In order to pass the course attendance to all lectures is required. If special circumstances arise, attendance can be compensated by a written assignment according to the course instructors' decision. |
| Examination | The examination consist of a reflective paper covering a topic of choice from the lecture series and its applicability to your own research field. |
| Literature and other teaching material | A list of suggested reading material in form of review articles will be sent out to all registered participants. |

| Selection of students | The primary criteria are 1) the usefulness of the course for the doctoral student's research project, and 2) the written motivation submitted with the application. |
| More information | Joint venture between Karolinska Institutet, Keio University, and Peking University. The Swedish Medical Nanoscience Center at Karolinska Institutet is organizing a joint Summer Research School for graduate students together with highly ranked institutions in Japan and China. The purpose is to provide a global course program in Nanomedicine, and to promote research and interactions among young PhD candidates. This year's course is focused on applying nanomedicine to the areas of infection, inflammation, and immunology. Students at KI can participate in this one-week lecture course along with students from Japan and China. The participants from Keio and Peking University will stay an additional 3 weeks at KI and participate in experimental work in selected laboratories. The aim of the course is to demonstrate the interdisciplinary field of nanomedicine by bringing together highly-ranked experts in such diverse fields as medicine, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology and engineering.
