| Kursens lärandemål | After the course, the participants will be able: - to describe and to visualize nucleic acid structures. - to apply principles regulating nucleic acid structures. - to explain the relation between structure and function in nucleic acid molecules - to evaluate critically experiments used to provide RNA or DNA structural information. |
| Kursens innehåll | A general introduction to nucleic acids nomenclature. Structural and conformational features of nucleotides. Physical properties. Hydrogen bonding and base stacking. Water and nucleic acid. Metal ion and nucleic acid. Secondary and tertiary structures of DNA and RNA. Methods to determine structures and dynamics of DNA and RNA systems (such as x-ray crystallography, NMR, theoretical approaches and so on) General consideration on protein-nucleic acid interactions, DNA super-helix, higher order nucleic acid structure. Small introduction to secondary structure predictions, structural database, molecular visualization. Three invited lectures on specific topic. |
| Arbetsformer | The course consist in lectures, seminars, short presentations given by the participants. group activities under the supervision of the course leader, computer tutorials on database and molecular visualization (14 meetings of three hours each) During the course period, the participants will work individually on an written assessment portfolio, give and receive feedback on the written work. In addition, the participants will prepare and discuss a seminar on an assigned topic. The participants should integrate each lectures hour with homework and reading. |
| Examination | A final written exam will be used to assess the participant's ability to describe and apply the structural principles of nucleic acid structures. The seminar and written assessment portfolio will be used to assess the participant's ability to explain the relation between structure and function in nucleic acid molecules and to evaluate critically experiments used to provide RNA or DNA structural information. |
| Obligatoriska moment | The participant must participate actively by attending the lectures and the seminars, by completing the assigned tasks. In addition, the participant must complete the assessment portfolio and final exam. Absence to a lecture will be compensated with extra assignments. The students will get some key questions on the corresponding lecture, and the answers should be submit in written form for review and approval. |

| Urval av studenter | Priority will be given to KI students working on projects that required knowledge in nucleic-acid structure. Selection is based on the motivation given in the application form. |
| Ytterligare information | The course is in the blue seminar room in the NOVUM building, (Huddinge). The meetings will be on Monday, Wedsnesday and Thurday morning from 9-12 (except Thur 2/2 from 13-16 and Wed 22-2 no meeting) |
